The Indian Army is the largest component of the Indian Armed Forces with the President of India as its Supreme Commander and is commanded by the Chief of Army Staff. It was founded in 1895, but until 26 January 1950, the Indian Army utilized the British-pattern rank badges of the British Indian Army, incorporating the Tudor Crown and four-pointed Bath Star “pip”. It is only when India became a republic in 1950, the President of India became Commander-in-Chief, and the Ashoka Lion replaced the crown, with a five-pointed star being substituted for the “pip.” Indian Army ranks can be classified into 3 categories: Commissioned Officers – who are equivalent to All India Services and Group A Services in Defence Forces,  Junior Commissioned Officers – who are equivalent to Group B Gazetted officers, and other ranks comprise of Non-Commissioned Officers and Soldiers.
